Providence Housing Development Corporation welcomed 123 volunteers for United Way’s Day of Caring and Day of Action in Monroe, Ontario, Chemung and Tompkins Counties this May and June. Twelve different companies brought teams to help make a difference in the lives of many residents and staff by sprucing up the properties where they live.  Providence Housing develops, finances, and manages affordable housing for seniors, individuals with special needs, and families.

Volunteers typically enjoy Day of Caring because it gives them a chance to take a day off from working in their offices to assist various non-profit organizations with projects together with their colleagues. Teams at Providence Housing helped to beautify properties where seniors, families and individuals with disabilities or in need of supportive housing live. The largest group, with 30 volunteers from Oldcastle (a division of CRH), helped at West Town Village (WTV) senior apartments in Henrietta. Five groups returned to Providence after volunteering previous years, including Oldcastle (WTV), Paychex (Carlson Commons/Plymouth Manor), Carestream (Holy Rosary Apartments), Howard Hanna’s Chili-Ogden team (Atwood Park Apartments) and Hyatt Regency (Rivendell Court). Kodak Alaris, new to Providence, brought 15 volunteers to clear brush and landscape the grounds at St. Salome and Durand Senior Apartments. For Day of Caring in Ontario County, nine volunteers from Wegmans in Geneva and Empire Access provided yard maintenance at Shortsville Meadows, Elizabeth Blackwell and Clark Park Apartments. For Day of Action in the southern tier counties, 22 volunteers from Corning, Inc. and six from the United Way of Tompkins County tackled landscaping projects in Elmira and Trumansburg.

“Everyone deserves to live in a nice home,” said Mark Greisberger, Executive Director at Providence Housing. “Volunteers help enhance our properties by helping staff with seasonal yard maintenance, painting, and other time-consuming projects.” The residents like to see the flowers planted and their yards looking well-kept with fresh mulch each year, and the seniors often enjoy serving lunch to our volunteers during Day of Caring.

Providence Housing’s mission is to strengthen families and communities by creating and providing access to quality affordable housing enriched by the availability of supportive services. Providence Housing is a not-for-profit corporation affiliated with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester, New York.
