Volunteers from Six Companies Made Day of Caring a Priority
Providence Housing Development Corporation welcomed 80 volunteers for United Way’s Day of Caring in Monroe County on May 12, 2016, plus 10 additional volunteers are expected to help the non-profit organization by the end of June, all because of United Way’s Day of Caring efforts in both Monroe and Chemung counties. Five companies came back to volunteer after two to six years of service and one new company, First Niagara Bank & Trust, helped make a big impact on the properties and affordable housing communities.

Volunteers from various businesses, who wanted to give back to the community, worked outside on a gorgeous day off from their office jobs to spruce up Providence Housing properties and be productive in a different way — by doing yard work and cleaning. Ten volunteers from Closing USA and 20 volunteers from First Niagara Bank & Trust did weeding, mulching and planting at senior living properties Atwood Park in Gates and West Town Village apartments in Henrietta. A Paychex team of 15 volunteers helped beautify properties at Carlson Commons and Plymouth Manor Apartments in the city. This was Paychex’s fifth year participating in Day of Caring at Providence Housing. After a hard day’s work, they celebrated with lunch and a cookie cake. Three dedicated volunteers from Hyatt, who have helped at Rivendell Apartments for the past six years, returned to Providence in the Park Avenue area to “do whatever was needed.” A team of 20 volunteers from Canandaigua National Bank, who have worked with Providence for three years in Monroe and Ontario counties, weeded and planted flowers for the senior housing community at St. Salome Apartments in Irondequoit, while 12 Voiceport employees scheduled time in shifts doing yard work at Holy Rosary and Brown Street properties. This June, 10 volunteers are expected in Elmira at McNiff Commons through United Way of Chemung County’s Day of Action program.
“I’m really thrilled that we have volunteers coming back every year to join us on this day,” said Mark Greisberger, Executive Director of Providence Housing. “Hyatt and Paychex have been helping us for five or more years – they know the properties, ask to do special projects, and look to get the most done with their time.” Volunteers want to be busy and feel like they are making a real contribution. Kristopher Laughrey, volunteer coordinator for Day of Caring at Paychex, checked ahead to make sure there was “a sufficient amount of work that needed to be done” for his team. The Paychex Information Technology team out of Henrietta has worked on multiple Providence Housing properties over the years to maximize the volunteer impact on the organization.
